Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island in Maine. It shares the island with Bar Harbor and other towns. The park is not one enclosed area, it has sections that are broken up by towns and private land.
The park has many hiking trails and miles of carriage roads for biking and walking. There is one sandy beach in the park where the water is as cool as 50 degrees in the summer. Rock climbing is also popular in the park, and a local climbing shop offers a guide service for those who want to try the sport for the first time.
The town of Bar Harbor has many inns and shops, as well as an old restored movie theater that shows one movie at a time. For a little extra, you can sit in the balcony. Many places in Bar Harbor make bag lunches for you to take on your hike or picnic. We got our lunch from 2 Cats on Cottage Street.
There are public campgrounds in the area in addition to the two camp grounds in the park. The cheapest camping we have found is $12 in the park at a first-come-first-served campground. The usual price for camping is about $18 for a tent site. Hookups are available at additional costs.
We have eaten several time at 2 Cats on Cottage Street. They serve breakfast and lunch. There are many restaraunts in Bar Harbor over a wide price range.
