Santa Cruz Santiago

Santa Cruz

Home of the Darwin center, outdoor bars, grocery shopping, and craft and gift shops. But most notably the Darwin Center. There are a lot of nice animal exhibits at the center, but perhaps our favorite was walking among the giant tortoises. They were inches from us in the path so we could see them closely. Very cool!

Isla Santiago

The walk on the black lava rocks in the tidal pools was unimaginable. Brilliant Sally Lightfoots danced their way over the rocks while herons and oyster catchers tucked into miniature coves looking for food. A natural rock bridge spans a view of fur seals swimming in emerald green water. Amazing!

Tidal pools trap seashells and urchin spines at the feet of countless marine iguanas lunching on algae. Each spot is reached by tenderly stepping from one damp rock to the next while carefully avoiding mama and baby sea lions dozing along the path.

Bartolomé

It is a tie between Bartolomé and Santiago for favorite island. Landing on Bartolomé is like entering another world. The stark volcanic panorama is painted in brilliant reds, oranges, and warm browns. Little penguins play on the black lava rocks along the shores. Navigating though the Bainbridge Islands to Chinese Hat from this island shows the incredible diversity of the islands with pelicans, sea lions, Sally Lightfoots, and countless birds. A perfect Grand Finale for a perfect trip.
