Ireland

General Information

I can't say that my first visit to Ireland was a great one. It began with a car accident and ended with a masked trio of gunmen robbing my hotel in Portmarnock. In between, I had the consistent misfortune of finding the attraction I was visiting either closed or open but disallowing photography. Thankfully, a few weeks later we finally had a great trip in Ireland.

Driving in Ireland is like no other place in the world. Having learned how to drive a standard (stick shift) in the UK, I thought Ireland would not be a problem. It was. There is usually no where to pull over and the country roads are built for small flocks of sheep. Get insurance if you rent a car. That is my only word of advice.

Another point about Ireland. Specifically The Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK If you make that mistake, the locals will be happy to correct you.

We found it challenging to find a map that indicated the castles and ruins. So far the best we found is Collins Road Atlas Ireland.

Where to Stay

I stayed at The Grand Hotel in Malahide which was spectacular. and a few steps from the Irish Sea and nice dining. When my company is paying, that is where I stay. For other times, we had a hard time finding a B&B. We finally found one that was on a farm:

Roughgrange Farm, B&B:
