The hike up Huyana Picchu was very steep. As we climbed up the peak, we were able to get a great view of Machu Picchu in the morning sun before the crowds of tourists showed up. We were fortunate to stay at the Sanctuary Lodge the evening before so we were able to enter the park before the busses from the hotels in Aguas Calientes arrived.

As we rose above the shelter of the trees, the view below was pretty scary. We figured this must be safe since so many people hike the trail so we continued on to the top.
At the top there are remains of buildings that you can hike around on a loop trail. It is advisable that you follow the direction of the arrows on the trail since passing another hiker coming the other way can be impossible in several places.
Overall, the hike took us about an hour and a half from beginning to end, but you should allow for more time so you can hang out and rest. We just wanted to fit in showers before checkout after our hike so we were a bit pressed for time.
